Seminole County broke ground on the new Rosenwald Community Center where the former stood. The county also unveiled a new name for the property: Rosenwald Legacy Park. The school was built in 1931 as part of a movement to improve education access for African American children.

  • Where: 1096 Merritt St., East Altamonte Springs
  • Site: 12 acres
  • Community center: 6,000 square feet
  • Also planned: walking paths, pavilions and a fishing pier
  • Expected finish: summer 2027

The design nods to the past. The center's programming space is meant for cultural events, community services and youth activities, and Rosenwald alumni joined county officials at the ceremony.

“We've preserved some really great historical writing in the concrete behind us that will be a cornerstone of the building.”

Andrea Wesser-Brawner, Seminole County chief strategy and innovation officer
