CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Florida Highway Patrol arrested two drivers this week under the new Super Speeder law—one driver sped 116 mph in a 65 mph zone on SR 528 and said she was rushing after her son was bitten, while another was clocked at 113 mph in a 60 mph zone on I-4; both vehicles were towed and charges filed. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Residents in Sanford expressed strong concerns over the planned road connector that will link State Road 417 to the airport because they fear it may cost them their homes and alter the area's rural character. The Central Florida Expressway Authority said the two-lane road is designed to shift 22,000 cars from local roads and will be reviewed by its board in October + some community members voiced opposition. - ➤ Seminole County officials are giving out empty sandbags on Thursday and Friday from 3-7 p.m. to help residents prepare for hurricane season — each household can receive up to 20 bags at BOOMBAH Sports Complex in Sanford, Seminole Softball Complex in Altamonte Springs, or Red Bug Lake Park in Casselberry — county officials said. - ➤ MHACF will open a free mental health clinic in Sanford in spring next year to give no-cost care for those below 300% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines — the state provided $125,000, half of MHACF’s original request, to fund start-up costs — and the clinic will offer assessments, counseling, support groups and medication services to up to 800 people.
