COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, local advocates including CEO Juliette Kong and Sheriff Dennis Lemma discussed child abuse prevention as part of National Child Abuse Prevention Month—explaining signs of abuse and urging community members to report concerns and access local support. They also outlined available resources to help protect children and strengthen families.  WESH
  • On April 12, WESH 2 received five awards from the Florida Association of Broadcast Journalists for its work in community service and public affairs. The station won Community Service Station of the Year for the third time and earned accolades for its special WESH 2 Chronicle: Life After Pulse, political reporting, weather coverage and photojournalism.  WESH

CRIME NEWS

  • A drive-by shooting injured one person Monday night when an unknown suspect fired one round into a vehicle at the intersection of Hellcat Lane and State Road 46—deputies said the victim was taken to a hospital in stable condition and a person of interest is being questioned.  WESH

FINANCE NEWS

  • Florida residents will have until May 1st to file eligible tax returns—this new deadline covers individuals, businesses, and tax-exempt organizations in all 67 counties while payments due before remain unchanged. The IRS extended the deadline after initially granting relief for hurricane-affected areas to give everyone extra time this tax season.  FOX 35 Orlando

  • Sanford city officials say they are gathering input from nearby cities to develop best practices for a backyard chicken program. City commissioners will receive an update at the work session on April 28 at 4 p.m.—the current code restricts keeping chickens near homes.  WKMG
